The covid-19 pandemic has had striking impact on all areas of activity all around the world. All activities had to be moved online overnight. This has been a surprise for universities but is also an opportunity for the modernization and digitalization of education. There exist different models to organize university education that have an effect of the tools that need to be bought and the methodologies that can be applied. Many questions come up.
Is it better to transmit the blackboard with a camera, or to replace the blackboard by a big interactive monitor on the wall or a smaller one on a podium? How to achieve good engagement of remote students, who might be more distractable than students sitting in the lecture hall? How to promote active learning for present and remote students, simultaneously. What techniques exist to make hybrid breakout groups that work effectively? How can you organize peer teaching in a hybrid environment? Is the HyFlex model (hybrid, flexible), where students can attend class in person or online, but also view the recording at a later time, a good model or does it have disadvantages?
The pandemic represents a challenge to organize education at present, but also an opportunity to promote lasting changes. What are these lasting changes that can be put on track right now? We’d like to hear about your best practices and innovation proposals for the future of higher education.
